Megalodon means "big tooth" in Greek, originating from the words megas (meaning large or great) and odon (meaning tooth). It refers to an extinct species of giant mackerel shark (Otodus megalodon) that ruled the oceans for nearly 20 million years before going extinct about 3.6 million years ago
