Helmeted head of Athena with obverse Janus. The god of beginnings, and January's namesake, Janus is also the god of gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. Janus looks to the future and to the past and is depicted with two faces, presiding over the beginning and ending of conflict.
