Athena's Wise Owl

This gold coin is a replica of a bronze coin minted approximately 2170 years ago (200-133 BCE.) in the ancient city of Pergamon, which was located in the region of Mysia in Asia Minor (modern-day Bergama, Turkey).

The coin depicts the helmeted head of Athena that includes a star on the helmet which symbolizes victory. The second side depicts an owl with its wings spread, standing on a palm branch.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom. The helmeted depiction of her represents her fierce protection of the city, while the owl represents the embodiment of Athena’s intellectual powers.
