This gold coin is a replica of a silver coin minted approximately 2350 years ago (350-300 BCE.) in the ancient city of Selge, located in the region of Pisidia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey).

The coin depicts the Gorgon Medusa’s head, with its petrifying gaze and protruding tongue, as a potent symbol of protection from evil. The second side depicts Athena wearing a helmet which symbolizes her protection over the city.

Athena’s helmeted head reflects Selge’s reverence for the goddess and speaks to Selge’s cultural and religious affiliations.
