This gold coin is a replica of a bronze coin minted approximately 2450 years ago (466-405 BC.) in Syracuse, Sicily.

The coin depicts Arethusa looking right, with hair bound upwards. The second side depicts an octopus. Arethusa was the patron nymph of Syracuse, and her image coupled with the octopus highlights the city’s connection to the sea during the Second Democracy after the fall of the Deinomenid tyranny.

Arethusa was a protective local figure that symbolized life, wisdom, and divine protection.
